Bohannon
Bohannon @ The Beacon...
In the early 70's the Beacon Theater on Broadway sometimes had these incredible star studded shows. In 1975 I remember one very well featuring The Stylistics, Mandrill, Betty Wright... & Bohannon. The Stylistics had lot of well known hits & sounded great... but quite disappointing visually. My imagination had painted a much more flattering picture of them... their records are still monumental. Mandrill didn't have the same level of popular hits... but their performance was memorable & impressive. Betty Wright had a number of hits, including a new disco hit "Where Is The Love", her performance was sensational! I had never seen Bohannon before, but he also had a new song big in the clubs "Foot Stomping Music", so I was really keen on checking him out. His band members were a little like Mandrill, a lot of shakers & percussion, a lot of dancing & moving on stage, some bare chested, hot, & a lot of sweat. Unlike the rest of his band, Bohannon was dressed impeccably, 3 piece suit, large collar, thick white tie, & platform shoes. The show was great, they were all jamming, & his band members quickly began to sweat up a storm. Bohannon was tight on the drums & voice was on point... but he surprisingly never sweat, remaining pristine & immaculate to the end... while his band virtually melted in front of us. A couple of years later he released "Let's Start The Dance". My friend, Jonathan Fearing had done the "Let's Start II Dance Again" remix Feat. Caroline Crawford & Dr. Perri Johnson, & gave me a great unreleased version with a hot guitar breakdown that I've never heard in any other mix. In the 80's I did an edit of that mix for Rock Mo records (vinyl only), & now for the first time it's out digitally. Bohannon & Caroline made a number of great follow ups, but "Let's Start The Dance" remains in a class of it's own, & still one of my most played all time favorites!
